The portrait is one of the formal challenges of figurative art. Alan Dedman produces a lively response to human subject matter with his maternity scenes and paintings of the human face. Over recent years he has produced portraits of young women, children and people close to him. Alan is a capable artist, able to work on family portraits he gets the character of the sitter. Alan has to work from photo reference at times but much preferes to work directly from observation.

A good portrait can take more than 100 hours to complete - hence the use of photo reference.
